Citizen Science - Ants
School of Ants project
Deborah Marr, Associate Professor in Biology, Indiana University South Bend
ED2 Workshop – July 2014
Collection Data:
Collection procedure:
1) Label four 3x5” white notecards as Green. Take the cards and 1 Keebler Pecan Sandie cookie to a green outdoor space (lawn, garden, forest). Place the cards on the ground about 1 foot apart. Break the cookie into four equal pieces and place piece of cookie on each card. May need to add small rock to card if it is windy. Make sure edges of card touch the ground so that ants can easily access.
2) Choose a nearby site that has a paved surface. Repeat step 1, but label four white notecards as Paved. Place the cards in a paved environment.
3) Collect the cards one hour after you set out your cookies. Pick up card and quickly pour into zip-lock bag. Seal each bag immediately. To preserve specimens and prevent decomposition, place all 8 bags in a freezer overnight.
4) Log into School of Ants website, enter data and get confirmation code.
5) Mail the 8 bags to the address below. Add a bit of air to each Ziploc bag to cushion the ants so that they are not crushed. The envelope should contain
a. 8 bags (four bags with ants and card labeled green and four bags with ants and card labeled paved).
b. Data collection table (shown above) with confirmation code
c. Mail to: The School of Ants Team, North Carolina State University, Department of Biology, 127 David Clark Labs, Box 7617, Raleigh, NC 27695
